to me march 28th was a lucky day. it was on that particular evening that i found myself at central stage, in the spotlight. winning the "21st century·ericsson cup" seventh national english speaking competition is a memory that i shall treasure and one that will surely stay.

more important than winning the cup is the friendship that has been established and developed among the contestants, and the chance to communicate offstage in addition to competing onstage. also the competition helps boost public speaking in china, a skill hitherto undervalued.

for me, though, the competition is a more personal experience. habitually shy, i had been reluctant to take part in any such activities. encouraged by my friends, however, i made a last-minute decision to give it a try. in the course of preparation i somehow rediscovered myself, a truer me.

i found that, after all, i like communicating with other people; that exchanging views can be so much fun—and so much rewarding, both emotionally and intellectually; that public speaking is most effective when you are least guarded; and that it is essential to success in every walk of life.

at a more practical level, i realized knowing what you are going to say and how you are going to say it are equally important. to take the original ideas out of your head and transplant them, so to speak, to that of others, you need to have an organized mind. this ability improves with training.

yet there should not be any loss or addition or distortion in the process. those ideas that finally find their waysintosanother head need to be recognizably yours. language is a means to transmit information, not a means to obstruct communication. it should be lucid to be penetrating.

in china, certain public speaking skills have been unduly emphasized. will it really help, we are compelled to ask, to bang at the podium or yell at the top of your lungs, if you have come with a poorly organized speech, a muddled mind, and unwillingness to truly share your views?

above all, the single most important thing i learnt was that as a public speaker, you need to pay attention, first and foremost, to the content of your speech. and second, the structure of your speech: how one idea relates and progresses to another.

only after these come delivery and non-verbal communication: speed control, platform manner, and so on. pronunciation is important, yet of greater importance is this: is your language competent enough to express your ideas exactly the way you intend them to be understood?

i was informed afterwards that i was chosen to be the winner for my "appropriately worded speech, excellent presence and quick-witted response". in so remarking, the judges clearly showed their preference: they come to listen for meaningful ideas, not for loose judgments, nor easy laughters.

some contestants failed to address their questions head on. some were able to, but did not knowswheresto stop—the dragging on betrayed their lack of confidence. the root cause was that they did not listen attentively to the questions. or they were thinking of what they had prepared.

as i said in my speech, "it is vitally important that we young people do more serious thinking ... to take them [issues like globalization] on and give them honest thinking is the first step to be prepared for both opportunities and challenges coming our way". we need to respond honestly.

a competition like this draws talented students from all over the country. and of course, i learnt more things than just about public speaking. since in the final analysis, public speaking is all about effective communication. and this goes true for all communications, whatever their setting.

and the following is the final version of my speech:

globalization:

opportunities and challenges

for china's younger generation

thirty years ago, american president richard nixon made an epoch-making visit to china, a country still isolated at that time. premier zhou enlai said to him, "your handshake came over the vastest ocean in the world—twenty-five years of no communication". thirty years since, china and america have exchanged many handshakes. the fundamental implication of this example is that the need to communicate across differences in culture and ideology is not only felt by the two countries but by many other nations as well.

as we can see today, environmentalists from different countries are making joint efforts to address the issue of global warming, economists are seeking solutions to financial crises that rage in a particular region but nonetheless cripple the world economy, and politicians and diplomats are getting together to discuss the issue of combating terrorism. peace and prosperity has become a common goal that we are striving for all over the world. underlying this mighty trend of global communication is the echo of e. m. forster's words "only connect!"

with the it revolution, traditional boundaries of human society fall away. our culture, politics, society and commerce are being sloshedsintosone large melting pot of humanity. in this interlinked world, there are no outsiders, for a disturbance in one place is likely to impact other parts of the globe. we have begun to realize that a world divided cannot endure.

china is now actively integratingsintosthe world. our recent entry to the wto is a good example. for decades, we have taken pride in being self-reliant, but now we realize the importance of participating in and contributing to a broader economic order. from a precarious role in the world arena to our present wto membership, we have come a long way.

but what does the way ahead look like? in some parts of the world people are demonstrating against globalization. are they justified, then, in criticizing the globalizing world? instead of narrowing the gap between the rich and the poor, they say, globalization enables the developed nations to swallow the developing nations' wealth in debts and interest. globalization, they argue, should be about a common interest in every other nation's economic health.

we are reminded by karl marx that capital goes beyond national borders and eludes control from any other entity. this has become a reality. multinational corporations are seeking the lowest cost, the largest market, and the most favourable policy. they are often powerful lobbyists in government decision-making, ruthless expansionists in the global market and a devastating presence to local businesses.

for china, still more challenges exist. how are we going to ensure a smooth transition from the planned economy to a market-based one? how to construct a legal system that is sound enough and broad enough to respond to the needs of a dynamic society? how to maintain our cultural identity in an increasingly homogeneous world? and how to define greatness in our rise as a peace-loving nation? globalization entails questions that concern us all.

like many young people my age in china, i want to see my country get prosperous and enjoy respect in the international community. but it seems to me that mere patriotism is not just enough. it is vitally important that we young people do more serious thinking and broaden our mind to bigger issues. there might never be easy answers to those issues such as globalization, but to take them on and give them honest thinking is the first step to be prepared for both opportunities and challenges coming our way. this is also one of the thoughts that came to me while preparing this speech.

the arrival of the year 1999 has brought with a near perfect opportunity to take a look back at the last one thousand years, assess man’s successes and failures, and look forward with our predictions of the third millennium.

already this afternoon you’ve heard many assessments and you’ve heard a variety of predictions. a variety so vast, ranging from lewis carol’s depiction of celebratory life, to the irish celebration of death. so vast a variety that it’s difficult to find any common ground amongst the contestants here today. perhaps the only thing that we all share is that we are indeed discussing millennia, the old and the new and the turn of the millennium, and we’re all discussing it in the same language.

a few hundred years ago to have held an event like this it would have been imperative that we were all fluent in a number of different tongues, for the approach of combating the language barrier was simply to learn many different languages. of course people back then had an ulterior motive: that was to ensure that different languages held their different societies or positions, or as king charles v of spain put it, “ i speak spanish to god, italian to women, french to men and german to my horse.”

today our approach is somewhat different. instead of trying to vastly spread our verbal ability across the board, we’ve chosen rather to focus it, concentrating on our ability to master one particular language, the english language. time magazine recently suggested that by the turn of the millennium, english will be the lingua franca for one quarter of the world’s population. already today sixty percents of the world’s television and radio broadcasts are produced and delivered in english. seventy percents of the world’s mail addressed in english. and it is the language of choice for almost every bite of computer data sent across the globe.

but why english? there are no clear linguistic reasons for its suggested global dominance, certainly the grammar is complicated, the spelling peculiar and the pronunciation eccentric, to say the very least. one would need only look through the dictionary to find the vast list of amusing paradoxes in the english language?quicksand that works slowly, a boxing ring that is in fact square and a guinea pig that’s really neither from guinea nor is it a pig. doesn’t it seem odd that one can make amends but not one amend. or go through the annals of history but not one annal. the reason, ladies and gentlemen, is simple. english is strange, but no where near as strange as some of our alternatives.

perhaps i should give you a few idiomatic examples. in english we say “once in a blue moon”. the italian choose instead “every death of a pope”. irish doesn’t like our “drop dead”, replacing it rather with the slightly more obscure “you should lie in the earth.” and if you wanted to tell someone off in spanish our relatively obvious “go fly a kite” would be better served by the phrase “go fry asparagus”. english’s primary advantage is that of flexibility. on the one hand it has the largest vocabulary of all modern languages, allowing us, as its users, to say exactly what we want in exactly the words we choose to use. on the other, globalization has insured the introduction of a business english, a sort of trimmed down variety of the language we’ve all come to know and love.

it’s interesting to know that the simple list of just ten words, words like “a”, “and”, “have” and “the”, combined to form one quarter of all those ever used in modern communication. perhaps the real test is: will the global adoption of english as a master language insure the eradication of any misunderstandings that happen today? the answer is not as simple. russell hoven once asked: “how many people speak the same language even when they speak the same language?” but one can only hope that our only aim and our only chance of insuring that we communicate effectively with each other is to make sure that we do speak one universal language. in a thousand years time western clocks will hopefully have ticked onto the year 2999 and we can be assured that scientists, academics and futurists will convene, much like we’ve done today to look back at the third millenium and offer their predictions for the successes of the forth.

it’s impossible to imagine what they might say, impossible to imagine what technology they’ll have available or even which planet they’ll hold the meeting on. in fact, quite possibly the only thing we can say for sure is that they’ll be discussing the issues in one common universal language. and that will be the language of the third millennium. and that language without any doubt looks set to be english. thank you.

May loth Monday Cloudy

This afternoon my school held an English—speaking contest namedChallenging the Future in the multi—function classroom。 The students who are excellent at English took part in the contest。 I just went there as an audience。

I got a lot from their speech。 In their speech, I found all of them had made full use of the present time and conditions to prepare for the future and used the known factors to challenge the unknown ones。 From this I realized that we shouldnt waste our time of today and shouldnt put todays work off to tomorrow。 Today is the base of tomorrow。 I will no longer waste my present time。 I am going to study hard and do good preparation for my future。

global warming is actually a serious issue facing mankind, while

i’d like to illustrate it with a joke. say, passengers are enjoying themselves a peaceful time in a plane. suddenly, a voice came out of the loudspeaker.

“good evening, dear passengers, this is the pilot speaking. i’ve some good news and some bad news. the good news is that we’re ****** rapid progress at 530 miles per hour.

the bad news is that we’re lost and don’t know where we’re going.” this is the joke without an end but it leaves us endless imagination. now and here, why don’t we imagine together about something special?

if we take “the rapid flying speed 530 miles per hour” as our economic growing rate, take“being lost” as our problems such as global warming in the process of economic development, take the destination as the final solutions to the problems, then the sad joke is seemingly telling us a fact that we don't know how to solve the problem of global warming when we are developing our economy at a fast speed.

global warming is defined as the increase in the average temperature of the earth’s near-su***ce air and oceans since the mid-20th century and its continuation. global warming has brought us much harm such as sea-level rise, extreme weather patterns like indian ocean tsunami, pest and disease increase and agricultural output losses.

they sound terrible! but can you believe that it is we, our human-beings that cause all these troubles? according to the scientific research, global warming is caused primarily by increase in “greenhouse” gas emissions such as carbon dioxide emission, which mainly results from human activity.

we started our pace to pollute the environment and destroy the ecological balance since the industrial revolution. too much fossil fuel burning and deforestation have finally led to this crisis. naturally, we can’t help asking how we should develop our economy more healthily while not at the cost of our environment!

thus, a new economic concept, low-carbon economy is introduced. low-carbon economy refers to a new economic mode of less consumption of natural resources, less pollution, less emissions and more economic output. a direct result of it is to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and essentially, it leads to a new change in the patterns of energy consumption and economic development as well as in human life.

the concept was first put forward in the uk in 2003 in the energy white *****, titled “our future energy, creating a low carbon economy”. the white *****’s influence and its policy direction have attracted considerable public attention and extensive discussion. in fact, more and more countries are ****** transition to be***ing low-carbon economies and gaining the initiative in the new round of global ***petitions involves the development of a low-carbon economy.

as for china, the development of lce will not only help ease pressure on the national rising energy demands and reduce its dependence on energy import, but will also help boost environmental protection.

the government has already taken some actions to develop the low-carbon economy. for our ordinary people, we should be actively advocate and practice low-carbon lifestyle. be energy-saving, fuel-efficient and gas-saving.

in a word, it is more an attitude than ability.

now let’s go back to the preceding joke. if i were the pilot, i would proud to tell the passengers, “please don’t worry. we have found the direction and the destination is lce, a low-carbon economy!

”thank you for listening!

My college life

I have been in college for about one year.During my stay here,I come to realize college life is like a white paper.I draw a lot of color in the paper.I experience all tastes of life, sour, sweet, bitter and hot.I am from countryside which is far away from here.Sometimes, I miss my parents. But I can't often see my parents.Lucky for me, I made many friends there. They often help me and care about me.without their help, I would not be here today. Thanks for my friends here.My college life is rich and colorful. In my free time, I can do many more things besides study, Such as joining club and taking part-time job.It not only made my life more colorful, but also helps me improve my skills.Sometimes, I play table tennis with my friends. It is exciting and relaxing. The college is like a society.I learn many things in college.Let me learn how to better communicate with people...A college experience is part of growing up.I cry, smile, fall in love and get hurt.It makes me become a better person.I love my college life!
